Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

  • Do I need to have a learner licence to take driving lessons?
Yes, you cannot train on the roads without at least a learner licence.
  • I now have my learner licence, how many lessons will I need?
This depends on the individual, but it may take 5 to 10 lessons to learn the basics in an automatic car. A manual car will take longer. The learner driver is expected to complete at least 120 hours of supervised on-road training before sitting the Restricted Licence Test.
  • Who can be a "supervisor" ?
A supervisor can be a driving instructor, a parent, a friend, or any other person who currently holds, and has held for at least 2 years, a Full NZ Driver Licence. He or she must sit in the front passenger seat and be in charge of the vehicle while the learner is driving.
  • When can I sit my Restricted Licence Test?
Six months after gaining your learner licence, and when you feel you have developed good driving skills.
  • Can I use my own car for the lesson?
Yes, if you already hold a restricted licence and you are training for the full licence, or if you want a final brush-up before sitting the restricted test.
  • Can the pick-up and drop-off locations be changed?
Yes, if it is in the same general area, and this is discussed with the instructor before the lesson.
  • If I don't use all the lessons in a discounted pre-paid package, can I get a refund?
Yes, you will get the balance remaining after the used lessons have been charged for at the appropriate rate for the number of lessons completed.
  • Is there a cancellation fee if I can't make the lesson time?
No, if you advise me well before the lesson time.
  • If I miss a lesson without advising you, is there a charge?
Yes, the MISSED LESSON FEE is $20, payable before the next lesson.
  • Should I learn in an automatic or a manual car?
Unless there is a compelling reason for you to drive a manual vehicle, I recommend that you learn to drive in an automatic. It is much quicker and easier to learn and pass the practical driving tests in an automatic. Once you pass the full licence test (in an automatic), learning to drive a manual vehicle is simply a matter of booking a few lessons with an instructor.
  • If I pass the restricted licence test in an automatic car, am I only allowed to drive in an automatic car?
Yes, this will be noted on your Restricted Licence. If you do drive in a manual car you must be accompanied by a supervisor.
  • If I pass the restricted licence test in a manual car, can I drive both automatic and manual cars?
Yes, it is assumed that a manual car driver will also be able to drive an automatic.
  • Once I pass my full licence test (in either an automatic or manual car), can I drive both automatic and manual cars?
Yes. The full driver licence does not distinguish between the two types of cars - you can legally drive either.
  • Are all driving instructors qualified (have an "i-endorsement")?
Beware - some may not be qualified, and charging fees illegally. It is a rigorous (& costly) process to gain and maintain an "i-endorsement", which allows a person to teach driving on NZ roads and charge a fee. This involves undertaking a comprehensive NZTA-approved instructors course and submitting to a Police "Fit and Proper Person" check every 5 years. You can always ask to see the instructor's i-endorsement on his or her driver licence.
